Opened in 1945 as the first large scale hotel in Medellin, Nutibara made the city a viable stop for visitors long before El Poblado existed as a neighbourhood, and it still runs as a working hotel rather than a museum piece. Rooms are simpler than the rate at newer luxury properties, but the location two minutes from Plaza Botero and the Metropolitan Cathedral is unmatched anywhere else on this list. Staying downtown rather than in Poblado suits a trip built around the historic centre and the metro system over nightlife.
